I was born in Hamilton, Ontario to second generation Japanese Canadian parents. I studied art direction and printmaking at the Ontario College of Art and Design and received my BA from McMaster University in fine art. I also took a residency in Awaji, Japan where I studied traditional Japanese woodblock printing. While I do enjoy painting and drawing and other types of visual art, my passion is printmaking of all types. The works you see here are predominantly woodblock, lino cut and silk screen. Printmaking is a highly labourious process as each colour in each image is hand carved and each image is printed up to seven times. It also requires specialized equipment such as large etching presses and carving tools. Most of my work has a limited print run and can never be reproduced as the blocks (or stamps) are destroyed in the printing/carving process.
I recently moved to the Annapolis valley with my wife, who grew up in Canning. I have been inspired by the beauty, colours and friendly people here and have been producing lots of new work.
