Israel Ekanem is a storyteller. Everything else follows from that. As DJ Ubuntu, he produces and performs afro house, amapiano, afro tech, and house, music that carries the same intention as his films: to move people, connect them, and leave them with something they carry home. He hosts The Off Kilter Show on CKDU Radio and runs the Ubuntu Podcast Network, home to platforms dedicated to artists who deserve a wider audience. As a filmmaker, Israel founded Ubuntu Media, a Halifax-based production company whose name draws from the South African philosophy "I am because you are." His films have screened at the Toronto Black Film Festival, the Atlantic International Film Festival, and the Halifax Black Film Festival. His short Kill Your Masters won Best Short at the Calgary Independent Film Festival. His non-profit, All Voices Society, gives youth, immigrants, and communities of colour the tools and space to find their voice and share their story. It is the clearest expression of what he has believed since his grandmother first showed him: that stories, told with care, have the power to change the world.
