Kel Parsons
Kel Parsons is an emerging visual artist, writer, and curator who holds a BFA in visual arts from Memorial University’s Corner Brook campus in Newfoundland and Labrador. Kel has spent the last five years focusing primarily on textiles, sculptures, and words. Kel is also a co founder of redacted collective, a group of emerging artist who aim to transgress norms of performance, curatoon, and oppressive, elitist gallery culture. As a lifetime Obsessive Compulsive-Disorder-Haver, Kel utilizes their art practice as exposure therapy and as a way to push traditional art boundaries while exploring what is considered icky, taboo, and grotesque contrasted against professional, curated, or censored spaces. Kel has a complicated relationship with garbage, germs, and the body. Informed by feminist and anarchist theory and literature, Kel’s practice uses mixed media art and found materials in an attempt to not only heal this but also to subject others to the detailed or exaggerated grossness and emotions that they deal with daily. Kel is highly collaborative and highly interested in interacting within communities to encourage art as friendship, self-care, and as a way to use up items already available to us by reusing and up cycling.
