Liz Bateman is a self-taught scientific illustrator and artist based in Nova Scotia’s Annapolis Valley. A fisheries biologist by trade, she has woven illustration into her work for years as a method of understanding and explaining her research subjects. What began as technical ink illustration turned into a painterly approach to representing the vibrant colour of local fish and wildlife through acrylic paint, watercolour, and gouache. Liz finds inspiration and reference for her paintings through her time spent fishing, snorkelling, and working off the coast of Nova Scotia.
