Gritty to Pretty Projects throughout Downtown Halifax

In 2015, DHBC launched a new Gritty to Pretty beautification program to award a limited number of grants for beautification projects located in Downtown Halifax. Gritty to Pretty includes two grants: One for any great beautification initiative, and one specifically for Façade Lighting. These projects contribute to DHBC’s beautification efforts to make Downtown Halifax welcoming to locals and visitors alike.

En 2015, DHBC a lancé un nouveau programme d'embellissement « Gritty to Pretty » afin d'attribuer des subventions à des projets d'embellissement situés dans le centre-ville d'Halifax. Gritty to Pretty comprend deux bourses: une pour toute initiative d’embellissement et une spécifiquement pour l’éclairage de façade. Description: The mural depicts rum running boats tied at dockside in the early morning (note how the artist, Jake Sibert, used existing elements on the wall, as part of the scene).

Description: The mural makes use of iridescent paint, creating both a daytime and nighttime experience (mural by Jake Siebert).

Name of Project: NSCAD Academy Wall
Location: Market Street between Sackville Street and Prince Street
Description: To beautify a retaining wall, artist Alex Mbuga Thuku, created a composition of fantastical African birds and beasts and their North American cousins, against a rainbow background.

Description: Every Downtown has its collections of interesting characters, and here artist Jason Skinner, collects a few of them.

Name of Project: The Pearl on Barrington Street
Location: Corner of George Street and Barrington Street
Description: Created through Sculpture Nova Scotia sculptor Miro Davis, says that she was inspired by the famous “Birth of Venus,” and that it “offers a place to find comfort for busy minds on busy streets. When you sit on the pearl, her shell forms a throne behind you, creating a protective shelter that invites contemplation.”

Name of Project: Word on the Street Three Little Libraries
Location: Scotia Square (close to Barrington Street and Duke Street Corner), Maritime Museum (waterside) and close to 1361 Barrington Street
Description: Word on the Street’s Free Little Libraries provide beautiful ways to promote literacy, create gathering spots, and a means of fostering a feeling of community and neighborhood.
