The 16mm Window

The Atlantic Filmmakers will present short films shot and finished on 16mm film by local artists rear-projected onto the front window of the co-op. The films will be viewable from the sidewalk, but the public will also be invited into the co-op to see the 16mm projector behind the window, making visible an art form and a technology that is increasingly rare.

Since the film industry has switched to digital filmmaking, AFCOOP has made a continual commitment to encouraging the use of analog film technologies. As part of this commitment, in 2018, AFCOOP put on a series of hand-made, analog-focused workshops with visiting artist Lindsay McIntyre which has resulted in many of our community members working in this medium. Leading up to Nocturne, AFCOOP will host a short series of workshops taught by local cinematographer Gareth Roberts. The focus of the workshops will be learning how to use some of AFCOOP's unusual and under-utilized 16mm cameras and to create works using these devices. From these workshops and a call for submissions to all artists working in 16mm, up to ten works were selected for presentation by a peer jury. During Nocturne, audiences will be able to view the short films from the sidewalk and are also invited inside the co-op to see the projector.
