Becoming Halifax

Landmarks from across Halifax converge to walk the runway.

Over the past year, I’ve been sewing a world of Halifax landmarks turned into wearable fashion. So when I read the prompt for Nocturne 2023, to "transform the city" into a new way for people to experience, I felt like this project of mine couldn't be more suited. There have been countless iterations of every Haligonian landmark in print, paint, and sculpture. Despite this, I hypothesize that there is still an unremitting eagerness to document and share our identity through our unique iconography. I started this project, Becoming Halifax, as a brand new take on sharing Halifax landmarks through costume.

During Nocturne, these landmarks will converge on the runway. Patrons of Becoming Halifax will see these costumes up close as they strut down stage. They can expect to see all the well-known tourist attractions, like Peggy’s Cove lighthouse, Citadel Hill clock tower, and the Public Gardens, to the locally-revered Tuft’s Cove power plant, Purdy’s Wharf office, and many others. This immersive runway experience explores the personification of our cityscape.

As I’ve built and shared my works to a growing audience, and explored growingly niche landmarks, I feel strongly that my hypothesis is true. There is nothing innately alluring about a corporate office building or a power-generating station. Yet, nonetheless, we proudly view them as a symbol of us and our identity, in a way that visitors from even the next town over might not appreciate. Becoming Halifax explores and celebrates this notion.
