In acknowledgement and respect for Mi'kma'ki, the ancestral, unceded and unsurrendered territory of the Mmi'kmaq People, we wish to submit our art project to Nocturne 2021.

“Bison in the Cathedral” is a site-specific mixed media video projection. It is a three minute video loop to be projected outdoors, covering a large exterior wall at the back of Saint George's Round Church in Halifax, 2222 Brunswick Street. Reverend Father Hatt representing the church community, welcomes the video projection. Our community group of artists feel that this work totally connects with Nocturne's theme of the liminal as transitional state as described by Liliona Quarmyne. As an artist community, we are collaborating in partnership with the St. George's Round Church community. We would like to reach out and extend an invitation to the broad public within Nocturne.

The video consists of an imaginary scenario of animals wandering into a cathedral’s physical and metaphoric space. Stark images of wild animals - moose, bear, wolf and bison merge and collide with religious icons such as saints and angels in a manner where they are presented as equals. Do these images reveal animals fiercely struggling to get out of humanity's grips of environmental destruction? Or will the animals be consoled and comforted with the hope of a renewed spiritual practise, especially one infused with the sacredness of animal spirit. In other words can the cathedral escape its heavy symbolic past by re-imagining its future role as caretaker for all sentient beings.

Choral music and crashing waves are heard in the background accompanying the images. This sound could emphasize or soften the liminal state of fear, confusion and uncertainty as time is running out for all animals including ourselves. Bison in the Cathedral invites participants to imagine our planet’s future where hope for all sentient beings and the environment is included in this new way of connecting and caring for each other.
