Disturbances and Indelible Marks: Blue Roots

by Not Yet Collective
with support from Ayoka Junaid & Rae RezWell

Blue Roots, is an extension of our first collaborative project, Disturbances and Indelible Marks, which was presented at the Anna Leonowens Gallery in 2020. This project will build on Perez-Cromwell investigations of family history, ‘Missing Roots’, and Junaid's explorations of resilience in challenging times, ‘Finding and Reclaiming Centre’.

Rae RezWell and Ayoka Junaid are emerging artists who began collaborating in 2020.
Their individual practices and collaborations explore themes based on their personal and family histories, identity, and language. In keeping with the Nocturne 2022 theme: Legacies, Junaid and Rezwell’s new work, Blue Roots, will continue to honour our cultural traditions of knowledge sharing through storytelling, intergenerational exchange and collaboration. The artists will use cyanotype and mixed media printmaking on paper and fabric to deepen our understanding of our roles within our families and our places within Canadian society and culture as multi-racial, Deaf, and disabled folks. We will include work from Disturbances and Indelible Marks to provide context and a visible reminder of the legacies that brought us here. We plan to incorporate a participatory aspect that would engage attendees in shared story-making through the co-creation of torn paper collages.
