The 2024 season of NOISEmakers is a multidisciplinary exploration spanning theatre, music, and craft, bringing together seven artists who have drawn from their personal histories and cultural tales of birds from their homelands.

Expanding on their own unique and significant expertise, the stories have been developed through guided improvised performance using techniques Meng Gao developed when he established “Beijing Galli Theatre” before he relocated to Halifax. These improvised performances form the backbone of the project.

Working from these performed scores, Ilyes Chibane, has interpreted the movement in two ways: through print imagery showcased in abstracted drawing on postcard unique musical compositions. Bringing 15 years of musical practice into the theatre, his live piano accompanies the performance, inspired by the free-flowing birds surrounding the mountains of Algeria.

Diego Guerrero Betancourt is expanding his performance repertoire developed in Venezuela, Spain and Mexico for this Halifax audience. He contextualizes each unique tale through thematic image and video creation that is a layered projection for the event, creating the atmosphere and performing within it.

Two distinct NOISEmakers have created unique costume adornments for the performances. Lara Sturzenbaum, whose contemporary practice with biomaterials was developed during her senior year at NSCAD, jewelry department. This environmental aspect reflects her home territory – the Patagonian landscapes of Argentina.

Unique costume adornments crafted by Alicia Guo bring a focus on sustainability and environmental storytelling. After leaving China, Alicia launched her jewelry line, "My Precious Plastic," which incorporates recycled materials like plastic, shells, and glass. Together, the two creators deepen the visual and tactile elements of the performance, enriching the experience with layers of texture and resonance.

Bringing cohesion to the performance is Sergei Tsimbalenko, whose vast experience as Leading Stage Master at Moscow's "Taganka Theater" and as filmmaker informs his direction. Now in Halifax, where he is teaching and establishing his new company, "HIT (Halifax International Theatre)," this international award-winning director crafts seamless transitions between the various elements, uniting the stories into a fluid, engaging narrative.

The entire creation process is captured and shared through an interactive project site designed by Taba Dani, via his media company after leaving Iran. His digital expertise provides an innovative platform, allowing audiences to connect more deeply with the performance and extend the immersive experience beyond the physical space of the theatre, making the artistic journey both accessible and dynamic.

Together, these artists blend their personal histories, cultural stories, and creative skills into a powerful, multilayered performance that speaks to themes of migration, nature, and the human experience.

The seven NOISEmakers participants have been facilitated in the creation of this work by local artist Jessica Winton. She is joined by newcomer artist Shreya Talwar, facilitation mentee and 2023 alum of the program.
