Antoinette Karuna

Antoinette Karuna (she/her) is a visual artist working in textiles (rug hooking and weaving) and film. She resides in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Canada.

Her short film The Broken Hearted screened widely, including at the Toronto International Film Festival and the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival, and was the recipient of several awards, and her experimental documentary Fünf Kapitel vom Dreh was released on DVD by Pandora Film. Her textiles debuted at the Antigonight Art After Dark Festival in September 2020 and will be featured in an upcoming solo exhibition at the Antigonish Town and County Library in 2022 and in a group show at the Khyber Centre for the Arts in July 2021. She has received grants from the Société de développement des entreprises culturelles (SODEC), the National Film Board of Canada, the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec (CALQ), the ASAP Artist-Run Centre, and the Canada Council for the Arts.

Antoinette holds a BA in Communication Studies (specialization in Film Production) with a Minor in Creative Writing from Concordia University, Montreal. She will begin an MFA in Visual Arts at Memorial University (Newfoundland) in May 2022. She teaches Filmmaking in the Art Department at St. Francis Xavier University.

She is Sri Lankan Tamil through her father and French Canadian through her mother, and she spent her childhood in London, England. Prior to moving to Nova Scotia, she resided in Montreal and Berlin.
