Forest Floor

Join Janvier as the spruce roots of her home land take a journey above ground, allowing the audience to make a connection with the artist as each viewer relates to the spruce roots from their own lived experience.

This project began during the preparations to build a home; clearing a space, but finding instead that it was causing destruction to the area where the artist was attempting to root themselves. This dance exploration work is influenced by somatic-based practices and is improvised as the site of the installation changes and is transplanted elsewhere. Janvier describes, “as leaves fall, trees rot, fungus grows, I have a love for the smell of the decay as a natural part of life cycles reminding me that I too will leave my body so it can be returned to the earth. Yet the concrete covering the land (and possibly our hearts) makes our connections here difficult. It’s only when I’m in nature that ideas occur through a meditative walk with the trees, rock, water, and wind.” Join Janvier as the spruce roots of her home land take a journey above ground, allowing the audience to make a connection with the artist as each viewer relates to the spruce roots from their own lived experience.
