Nomadic Subjects

The exhibit works to illicit a response to the question: “who are you?” by exploiting the provocative nature of labelling. The exhibit asks people to reflect on the significance of difference in the construction of identity with the simultaneous inadequacy/destructive perception of the labels themselves.

This interactive exhibit will provide participants the resources to create their own labels to answer simple but provocative questions, such as: “who are you?” or “where are you from?” First attaching their labels to a length of string, the participants will have the chance to weave this thread onto a simply-constructed, unobtrusive armature, creating a web that will progress from simplistic to complex throughout the night as more labels are added or connected. This self-organized spatial response to the theme will act to deconstruct the idea of identity while visually representing a collective idea of community.
