When people feel supported they are better able to speak their truth. One of the barriers to creating stronger communities is the feelings of isolation or non-belonging experienced by members of that community (especially, I would posit, those who have been marginalized on a historical and/or societal level). Upon entering my project space, I will ask participants to reflect on what they would have wanted someone to say to them during a time of isolation or exclusion, a message that if they had heard it may have made them feel less alone and more connected. These messages will be the topics of small pieces of embroidery that are stitched and then sent out into the world, hopefully eventually finding someone who needs to receive them.
