There Is No Then and Now, Only Is and Is Not

The single channel video projection shows how settler colonialism uses race to restrict and place limits that negatively impact our communities by drawing attention to the existence of Native Americans with black bodies; New York City based artist Dennis Redmoon Darkeem performs and converses in the video.

The video will play a large scale projection of New York City American Indian community member Dennis Redmoon Darkeem performing a Straight Dance (a pow wow dance). The video contains an audio track of separate content, either recorded dialogue of a conversation between Dennis, Maria, and Jason, or ambient sounds produced by the dance regalia unaccompanied by any music. The intent of the video addresses the conceit that only White Westerners are allowed to be “half or part Native.” It subverts expectations of Who is allowed to be Native? What is half/part Native? Dennis is mixed-blood Native American and African American currently living in the south Bronx.
