Grace the polar bear is searching for her cub, Nova. This city of sapiens is not a safe place for a bear… but sapiens may also be the only chance Grace has to find her daughter. Can you help her make the right choices before the waters rise too high?

Bear Witness is a rare hybrid of mobile sculpture and interactive theatre. Cape Breton playwright/performer/activist Scott Sharplin portrays Grace as a literal mama bear: cynical yet hopeful, world-weary yet indefatigable. Audiences help choose Grace’s path based on evolutionary puzzles and ethical dilemmas. A happy ending depends on how spectators understand “progress,” and where they place their own species in the web of life.

Artist/designer Suzi Oram-Aylward creates Grace out of upcycled beach trash and LEDs. Even as real polar bears venture further south in search of food and stable ground, Bear Witness presents a magical, otherworldly character with a down-to-earth message that resonates powerfully in times of ecological crisis.
