I am proposing a large-scale collage-making project out of materials donated from people within the Halifax community.

Part one is announcing a call for materials from the public, where we would be asking people to submit either physical or digital images of ephemera that connects to their own personal legacy. Examples would be old photographs, letters, notes, blankets, tickets, drawings etc. anything that someone feels contributes to their personal legacy. Digital images will be turned into printed material. A physical submission box will be located in a public library.

Part two will be the nights of Nocturne where we will install a 2 meter by 5 meter (size can vary) piece of white paper on a wall, and ask the public to create a collage out of our collected materials, and supplementary materials that the collective will provide. People will be supplied with scissors, glue, and drawing materials. A volunteer from the collage collective will be present each night to assist participants and explain the project. We will include a guest book so people can record their contribution to the project.

Part three will be documenting the collage through photographs. A professional photographer will capture the final results and upload a high res image online for the public to view. The goal is to turn what was once ephemeral, into something that lasts forever.

Overall, this project is meant to encourage people to reflect on their own legacies, and how that can fit into the present and our greater community. By bringing ephemera that have personal significance into one place, we aim to create a feeling of connection through shared legacies. Collage offers a unique perspective that allows us to make sense of materials that may not have direct connections through visual play and exploring combinations. We feel that this project is widely accessible to people of all artistic skill levels.
