Becoming Halifax

Over the past year, I have been creating costumes taking the form of Halifax landmarks. This project has been expanding and gathering attention. I believe partially because of how revered and loved the landmarks are, but also because they are being represented in a brand-new way, beyond photos or sketches. So when I read the prompt for Nocturne 2023, to "transform the city" into a new way for people to experience and walk through it, I felt like this project of mine couldn't be more suited.

The core idea of the project is to have an exhibition of these costumes on a runway setting. Eight to 10 models will walk the runway wearing the outfits. A projector will display the real landmark in photo-video, to provide a point of reference to the viewer, driving home the idea of the cityscape transformation. I propose two to three scheduled "walks" of the runway over the course of the evening. Between these showings, the models will be about, allowing for closer inspection of the garments, and engagement with attendees.
