Downie Wenjack Legacy Space

Downie Wenjack Legacy Space, located on the boardwalk level of 1H, opened in early 2023. The space is meant to provide employees and guests the opportunity to learn about Mi’kmaw culture and the true history of the Indigenous people in this country, and in particular, Nova Scotia. Legacy spaces are intended to be safe, welcoming places dedicated to providing education and spreading awareness about residential schools in Canada and our journey of reconciliation.

Inspired by Gord Downie's call to action to build a better Canada and then 12-year-old Chanie Wenjack's harrowing attempt to escape a residential school he and his three sisters were forced to attend—where Chanie died trying to make the 600-kilometer journey home to his family—the Downie Wenjack Legacy Space aims to build cultural understanding and create a path toward reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Canadians.
