Celebrating the 50th anniversary of Atlantic News, come and play a brand new piece ….
‘Write that Headline’ is a celebration of the wild, the wonderful, and the downright wacky day to day news that has flowed through this tenacious independent shop over the last 5 decades.

Stroll by the shop front and see how the window pane turns into your writing canvas! Meet an enigmatic character behind the glass who guides you through writing your own headlines through the ages, all communicated via FM radio transmitter! Part magnetic poetry, part improv sketch, part game show, you’ll create headlines inspired from real historical articles and learn a little bit more about the inner workings of Atlantic News.

The News stand is a 20th century icon of the written word and miraculously, through the dedicated hard work of a small team, we still have one in Halifax. It’s a hodgepodge of a place that reflects those who frequent its space - elders who can remember the first days it opened its doors, university students searching for a planner and bag of chips, die-hard New York Times readers, that guy who gets music magazines every month and could tell you the top rock albums for every year since the 70’s, tourists grabbing the latest travelogue, and neighbours just popping in for milk and eggs.

The designs and the publications may have shifted over the years, but the desire still remains the same: to gather and hear what is happening both in our back yard and across the world.

Come play and get a glimpse of the history and camaraderie that is this Halifax icon: ‘Write that Headline’ - Atlantic News 50th Anniversary Edition!

Practicalities:
This is an interactive performance that takes place on a stage in the shop window of Atlantic News. The shop will be open at the time. Through audience interaction, the shop front window becomes a newspaper or magazine cover! There will be one person standing outside on the sidewalk to help facilitate communication between audience players and the performer inside, as well as to encourage photos of the headlines. The plan is to use an FM intercom system as well. Audience members will spin a wheel to choose the decade and publication style. There will be a deck of words for each decade. Words will be safely affixed to the glass on the inside. Then two props will be chosen and the performer will complete the image with a tableaux. Opportunities to discover facts and mini stories about Atlantic News will also arise. It is anticipated that the show will be ongoing, with short breaks, from 7 - 9PM on Oct 14th in the evening.
