Artist Talk - Lucas Hernandez Nascimento & Logan Robins

Lucas Hernandes Nascimento, AKA Coreto, (he/they) is a creative from Brazil residing in K’jipuktuk, Nova Scotia. A vocalist and voice teacher, he strives to be in the moment and focus on the process of everything. They experiment constantly with poetry, songwriting, drawing and printmaking, often described as a compulsory singer, you will likely hear Lucas before you see them.

Noticing is one of the subjects that are most prominent under Coreto’s interests. Having grown up in a hectic, overpopulated and overwhelmingly capitalist environment, it has always been easier to neglect and overlook in order to keep up with expectations and statistics. Today he puts value into the making of instead of the product; the breath before the shout; the community, purpose and thought before the action. Another subject is fear: no one is impervious to it. It is ok to feel it and that brave are those who make choices mindfully while afraid. Maybe because of these, Lucas tries to do things without rushing and thoughtfully, taking the time needed to contemplate and experiment.

Lucas has enjoyed performing with orchestras and in the circus, in operatic stages, sidewalks and park benches. Nowadays they prefer to be in choir or in ensembles rather than alone onstage.

Logan Robins (he/they) is a queer theatre maker, designer, and collaborative creator who strives to craft immersive and accessible live experiences through their art. Their practice functions on the tenets of eccentricity, environmental sustainability, and community care (with a focus on creating welcoming and accessible ecosystems which can nurture artists and audiences alike ). Much of his work explores site-specific and immersive reimagining of the ‘traditional eurocentric theatre space’- including pushing the limits of how stories can be told beyond the stage through intensive multidisciplinary collaboration. They are interested in deeply exploring the ecological and sociological ways in which we relate to land and how it is claimed, exploited, and nurtured through a settler lens. Logan is a firm believer in the power of collaborative creation and community building practices to foster the growth of the most impactful art.

Collective Bio:

The Unnatural Disaster Theatre Co. is an eclectic collective of artists based around Mi'kma'ki and beyond. With an ever growing roster of collaborators, UDTCo has been creating groundbreaking theatrical experiences since 2019 alongside organisations such as Shakespeare by the Sea, The Chester Playhouse, Kings Theatre, Cape Breton Regional Municipality (Connect Arts), Mayworks Festival, Halifax Regional Arts, and the Halifax Fringe Festival. As a collective founded by early career artists, UDTCo has a strong commitment to supporting emerging artists at all stages of their career and look forward to collaborating with such artists at Nocturne.

Coreto & Logan are a multidisciplinary artistic duo and both graduates of Dalhousie’s Fountain School of Performing Arts. Their combined interest in music, movement, and storytelling have led to electric collaboration- including three distinct productions of their most recent project, Hippoposthumous, which since 2021 has played in the Halifax Fringe Festival, at schools across the HRM, and in ponds and rivers across Atlantic Canada!

The Unnatural Disaster Theatre Co. is also no stranger to Nocturne- having first taken part in 2019 as the artists in residence with the Ecology Action Centre. They created an immersive puppetry piece called What the Owl said to the Orangutan which explored the past, present, and future of extinction of life on earth using puppets made almost entirely from recycled materials. Hundreds of participants took in one of several performances at Propeller Brewery and many participated in recycled puppet making workshops that ran between showtimes.
