Blooming Seating/The Bloom
The Blooming Seating’ is a unique combination of seating, lighting and public art that possesses flower petal hammocks for sitting, laying, or playing on during the warmer months, while the colder months sees these petals raised to transform the structure into ‘The Bloom’ – an artistic sculpture that acts as a vibrant and joyful piece of public art for the pedestrian mall.
This seating builds on the community's wishes from public engagement sessions to have something vibrant, fun and artful happen in Granville Mall. The Blooming Seating strives to inject new life to the area through all seasons and responds to the need for bringing a little magic to the site year-round. Integrating light with the structure ensures it comes alive at night. This seating is as much a piece artwork as it is seating, you can explore, lounge and relax on its three soft woven petals that are framed and supported by rigid metal edges and robust legs. The petals all connect to a solid and weighted central structure and then gradually angle down to the lowest point at the outer most edge, this range of heights accommodates a variety of users from young children to older adults.
When the structure is in its elevated form the petals detach from the legs and rise, embodying a blooming flower. The legs are then nested into the central structure and the petals meet and get locked together creating the full bloom expression. The Bloom can be seen prior to entering the pedestrian mall, which ultimately attracts persons into the space due to its bright and grand design that looms over head. The structure will be in its elevated form during the colder winter months where it can be seen through large snowfalls and continue to bring joy to Granville Mall during a period with lower levels of visitation.
